Mexico Closes Industrial Drain into River Due to Pollution

The municipal drainage that was discharging industrial pollutants directly into the Tepeji River has been closed by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa). This Monday, Profepa reported in a press release that, in response to citizen complaints related to the discharge of industrial pollutants into the Tepeji River, its personnel, along with elements of the National Water Commission (Conagua) and the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), conducted an inspection visit to the municipality of Tepeji de Ocampo, Hidalgo. During the tour, discharges with visible variations in coloration were observed, including black, pink, and purple hues, which are consistent with contributions from untreated textile industry water. The identified discharges come from the municipal drainage of Tepeji de Ocampo, to which various textile industries are connected, which may be making discharges outside the parameters established in the Official Mexican Standard NOM-002-SEMARNAT-1996. In light of this situation, Profepa carried out the administrative closure of the municipal drainage that was discharging directly into the Tepeji River. In turn, Conagua took water samples with the support of the national reference laboratory, with the aim of identifying the pollutants present in the discharge and having technical information that allows for the substantiation of subsequent actions. As next steps, Profepa and Conagua will carry out the corresponding administrative procedures with the municipality of Tepeji de Ocampo, in order to prevent the continued discharge of untreated wastewater into the water body. Likewise, Profepa will work together with the municipality in the regularization of the industries connected to the municipal drainage to ensure compliance with current environmental regulations. The Tepeji River is one of the tributaries of the Tula River. Therefore, this inspection is part of the restoration and sanitation efforts of the Tula River, in alignment with the presidential commitment focused on cleaning the three most contaminated rivers in the country.
